DO I NEED HEARING AIDS?

This is the most common question patients ask when being counseled about hearing loss. Many patients feel that this decision is made by the doctor or the audiologist. The truth of the matter is that the decision lies within you.

What are your needs?
Hearing loss affects patients in different ways, even when the actual hearing loss is the same. Some people rely heavily on their hearing due to demands at work and at home. Others only require that they hear in an occasional social setting. A business-person who misinterprets information during a board meeting may make poor financial decisions due to hearing loss. A grandparent who has been socially active with friends and family may feel embarrassed or isolated when unable to communicate effectively. Another person may only need to hear the television and their spouse. The decision to use hearing aids is based on your individual needs.

Do I even have a problem?
Denial can be a very strong factor in hearing loss. Many patients feel that they have no problems with their hearing, but they neglect the indicators of hearing loss. Many times patients are not aware of how their hearing loss affects others including employers, co-workers, family and friends. Hearing loss can cause: - problems at work with co-workers, clients and customers - embarrassment when meeting new people - frustration when talking to family - difficulty in restaurants, lectures or religious services - limitations in personal and social life - depression, isolation and confusion - compromise in safety, security and physical health

Am I a good candidate for hearing aid use?
